The Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce, is located amidst picturesque surroundings at Khandola, radiating from NH4A (Panaji – Ponda), Banastarim-Marcela-St. Estevam Road. The college was established in the academic year 1989-90, initially with B.A. and B.Com. programmes. In the subsequent year (1990-91) the Science faculty was introduced. Recently, the college has introduced the post graduate programmes in Geography and Microbiology. PG in Chemistry and Commerce subjects was introduced from 2017 onwards. The Research Centres in Chemistry and Geography will enable students to pursue their PhD studies from 2018 onwards. This consistent growth of the institution is a reflection of the tireless efforts of the teaching faculty and efficient supporting staff.

The college has a well-designed building and the extension of building with all modern amenities and state of art auditorium is under way. All the three streams of the college (Arts, Science and Commerce) are permanently affiliated to Goa University and recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC) under 2(f) and 12(B). The college is currently accredited with “A” grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore, a U.G.C. body that grants accreditation to colleges and universities. The college has also been ranked in the NIRF Rank Band 101 to 150 for the academic year 2018-19.

Since its inception in 1989, our college has been instrumental in producing a plethora of intellectual individuals who have contributed significantly to the college, society, and the state at large. The primary aim of the college is to tap the intrinsic potential of the students from the rural vicinage and metamorphose them into individuals, capable of inculcating values in the society, be it sports, art, culture, music, academics and research. Over the past few years our college also has garnered a status symbol in Performing Arts thus leaving an indelible mark for future generations.

Our Institution has been accredited with ‘A’ Grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and has been ranked between 101 to 150 by National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for the ranking 2018-19, 2019-20 & 2020-21.

During 2023-24, the college could extend scholarship benefits to numerous students including beneficiaries of SC/ST/OBC including scholarship for minorities and disability awarded by various external agencies, Government of Goa and Government of India.

The B.Voc. in Software Technology course was started from 2020-21 for XIIth any stream students. The degree in B.Voc. will be obtained at the end of 6 semesters but the exit with a professional certificate is allowed at every semester.

The College also offers CBCS (Choice based Credit System programmes for T.Y.B.A, B.Sc and B.Com with General and Honours degree.

The B.A General programme is offered in English / Psychology, Geography/Konkani, Economics / Political Science, and Hindi / Marathi

The college follows the Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes (CCFUP) under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 issued by Goa University for First and Second Year students.

The college has embarked on a journey of higher learning and research which is evident through the commencement of four new postgraduate courses in Chemistry, Commerce, Geography and Microbiology and a Cluster Research Centre in Chemistry, Geography and Microbiology.

Faculty is involved in continuous research activities to keep pace with recent advances in science and technology, commerce and industry, social sciences and humanities. They have presented papers at National and International conferences, symposia and published papers in reputed and peer-reviewed journals,in Scopus and Web of Science Indexed journals.

For the year 2023-24, undergraduate and the post graduate departments of the college organised conferences with funding from Directorate of Higher Education, Government of Goa, Vedanta and others.

Our Institution is a recognized Centre for IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) and the classes for various courses are regularly conducted. Our college has a well established Diploma/certificate course in Sanskrit language.

The college has 5 NSS units of 100 volunteers each who are engaged in socially beneficial projects which gives them hands-on training in various fields. NSS has given opportunities to students to attend National integration camp and various other activities.

The college has also initiated the NCC unit of army wing. Students are encouraged to keep themselves fit through various sports activities organised at interclass, intercollegiate, State and National Level. Individual artistic talents and creativity are nurtured and allowed to blossom under the aegis of the Student’s council. Our students have represented the college at the National and International sports events.

 

Environmental awareness as well as nature’s bountiful treasures is meaningfully dealt with in the activities of the Nature Club and Environmental Protection Committee. We advocate preservation of nature through an environmental awareness programme. Students have undertaken various projects through Swachh Bharat Student Internship (SBSI).

In addition to the regular course curriculum, the college also provides a wide spectrum of educational opportunities for skill development, entrepreneurship, employability and overall personality development of the students. For this purpose, various departments of this institution organise a number of activities like intercollegiate quizzes, poster making competitions etc. Furthermore, to maintain Industrial Institute Interface, College conducts various Industrial study tours.
